Starfish is a communication tool used by Minot State University faculty, staff, and students to support student academic success. Students do not succeed alone but are more successful when direct faculty-student communication is combined with effective support from advisors and other support staff on campus. One main feature of Starfish is the Early Alert program, which enables instructors to give praise (kudos) or raise concerns (flags/referrals) regarding students’ academic performance early in the term. Communication is sent to students regarding available resources and advisors/support staff are asked to reach out to students where appropriate. Students may be asked to access Starfish to complete the New Student Survey and/or use the software to schedule appointments with faculty/staff.
