Graduate Faculty status at Minot State University is based on academic qualifications and/or professional expertise.
Graduate Faculty with terminal degree
Full-time faculty with an earned doctorate or terminal degree in the discipline or a related field in which they teach. These faculty may teach graduate courses in their discipline or a related field and serve on or chair graduate student committees.
Graduate Faculty without terminal degree
Full-time faculty without a doctorate or terminal degree in the discipline or a related field. These faculty may teach graduate courses in their area of expertise and serve on, but not chair, graduate student committees.
Visiting Graduate Faculty
Visiting Graduate Faculty are part-time faculty who are academically qualified in a discipline or a related field. Visiting Graduate Faculty may teach graduate courses or serve on, but not chair, graduate student committees.
Definition of Academically Qualified
Faculty members are considered academically qualified to teach graduate courses and to serve on graduate committees by meeting either of the following requirements:
- They have earned a doctorate or a terminal degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution in the discipline or a related field in which they teach or advise. For example: A faculty member with a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education, teaches education-related graduate courses.
- They have a master’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution, and they have extraordinary teaching and/or scholarly skills and/or experiences that qualify the faculty member to teach and advise in a specific area of expertise. Their extraordinary teaching and/or scholarly skills and/or experiences must be documented and approved by the Graduate School. For example: A faculty member with an M.S. in Finance, exceptional teaching reviews, and experience working in the finance industry is approved to teach a graduate finance course in the M.S. in Management program.
Application Process
Graduate Faculty
Graduate faculty with and without terminal degrees are required to apply for graduate faculty status once and do not need to renew their graduate faculty status unless they plan to teach in a different discipline, in which case, they will need to provide documentation of their academic qualifications in that discipline, or if they gain additional credentials that change their status.
Visiting Graduate Faculty
Visiting graduate faculty must renew their status when their teaching or graduate committee assignments change or every 5 years by completing the graduate faculty status application.
Appointment Process
Applications must be submitted by the department chairperson and will be reviewed and approved by the Graduate School.
Application Deadlines
All applications are due to the Graduate School April 1, following annual evaluations.
